We had a great time in D.C. It's taken me forever to post about it but I slept a lot last weekend when we got back and now summer school is in full swing.
The highlight of my trip was on our last day. We met Harry Reid and John Ensign, and then had a rockin tour of the Capitol. It is so beautiful inside, I was completely blown away. Near the end of the tour we got to sit in the Senate Gallery while they were in session *clapping*. What a treat.
These are some of the places we went and things we saw:
National Archives: Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, US Constitution and Magna Carta
Ford's Theatre and Peterson House (where Lincoln died)
Air and Space Museum
Bureau of Engraving and Printing: seeing money being made was very cool
Museum of American History: Star Spangled Banner in a conservation room, the flag that was draped over the damaged part of the Pentagon building after 9/11, plus a fabulous exhibit on transportation.
The Washington Monument
Arlington Cemetery: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (changing of the guard was impressive), President Kennedy's grave, The Arlington House where General Lee lived.
Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial
The National Gallery of Art: very cool for me (I went alone and spared my family lol). Best suprises here were bronzes, marble statues and mosaics from Greece, a Van Gogh that I'd never seen. The architecture of the building was incredible.
On my way to meet everyone at the Museum of Natural History, I walked through the sculpture garden. Little did I know there was a treat awaiting me inside. I was floored when I saw Hector Guimard's Paris Metro entrance. Yay for that!
Museum of Natural History: extensive exhibits....very fun. The Hope Diamond and tons of crown jewels....mineral and gem exhibits for days!
Postal Museum, Union Station (so beautiful), hmmm....what else. Kevin and Tyler took to a Red Sox/Orioles game at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The girls and I saw them off on the train at Union Station and then shopped. When we were done we headed back to the hotel and watched the rest of the game, and saw Kevin and Ty in the crowd!
Fun fun trip. Lots of good memories :) I was so impressed by the architecture and the connection with our cultural heritage. Yay for that.
p.s. Starbucks are well hidden and tricky to find there!
