OMG California runs east west?

Sound suprising? Well it was to me too. We went to the cartography exhibit at NMA a few weeks ago. It was amazing to see maps of North America from the 1600s; back then it was thought that California was an island..and in one map, California was laying down--sleepy like--running east west. Funny :) Very cool collection.
